OVERVIEW OF MASSAGE

Physical therapies have been used throughout recorded history as an aid to healing and for maintaining health. Western massage techniques have evolved and been popularised by the work of Pehr Henrich Ling and Dr. Johann Mezger in the nineteenth century and others, who developed systematic massage methods and encouraged the use of massage as a medical treatment.

Different techniques have emerged over the years and a body of research has been built up which demonstrates the effectiveness of massage therapy. Massage education has become increasingly more sophisticated as it parallels this growth in knowledge.

Massage can be used for all age groups and health conditions and complements other forms of treatment. Massage can be used to stimulate circulation, improve skin function, relax muscles, assist the healing process, improve joint mobility and reduce pain. It also aids psychological and mental wellbeing by improving mental clarity and mood and relieving anxiety and stress.

Massage therapists primarily work in the health, sport and fitness industries and there is a large and growing demand in Australia for qualified, competent practitioners.
